to all of the families and individuals that came out to support our Help A Horse Day and Mocktail Hour Celebrations!
We had just under 500 visitors to the farm to meet the herd and learn about our programs! It was amazing to meet so many new friends and we are thankful for the continued support of our exisiting friends. We have entered a competition with the ASPCA for a grant worth anywhere from $2500 to $25000 so keep your fingers crossed and check with us for updates. Photo albums of the events are available on our Facebook Page!
Have you been by The Big Purple Barn lately?? It may not FEEL like Spring has sprung and we are all wondering when monsoon season will end BUT we welcome you to come by and catch up with the herd! In February, we welcomed Pepper Pig into the herd! Pepper is a special needs potbellied pig who now calls our farm home. She is quickly warming up to volunteers and visitors. She enjoys snacks, belly rubs and will wag her tail when excited! She was recently joined by several pullets (baby girl chickens) and our ducks, Sylvia and Jane!
Have you seen Baby Bodi?? He is growing up so fast! He is now fully weaned from his mama and integrated into the pony herd with his own stall. He gets along with just about everyone and has learned to duck under the fences like Presley so he can talk to everyone in the herd!
Certified Horse Discovery Center!
The Big Purple Barn is pleased to announce that we have been chosen to participate in the Maryland Horse Industry Board's Flagship Inaugural Program: Maryland Horse Discovery Centers! The goal of the discovery centers is to provide a place where people can go and meet horses for the first time, or as a returning enthusiast. Discovery Centers went through a rigorous certification process to ensure excellent care of our horses and ponies as well as dedication, safety, training and enthusiasm for helping people and horses connect. Maryland wants to help nring new enthusiasts into the booming Maryland Horse Industry and our program may become a model for a nationwide program! In addition, we are the only Discovery Center certified in Prince Georges County. We are ecxited to expand out outreach programs with the help and support of the Maryland Horse Industry Board so watch for BIG NEWS in 2015!
The Big Purple Barn was recently featured on the COVER PAGE of the Bowie Blade News! Thank you to reporter Atalie Brown for a wonderfully written article about our very special horses and farm. Please click the PDF link below (to the right of the photo) to read the FULL story!!

Affectionately known as Justin, Bubba and even Papa Bear
On Friday 1-10-14 we said goodbye to our beloved Morgan gentleman and papa bear, Justin. He is the inspiration for our sanctuary. For 22 years our co-founder Barbara has been honored to walk by his side without ever viewing the world from his back. His neglect and abuse before coming to us left physical and emotional scars that ran deep and permeated his life for his entire time he was with us. We have fought alongside his valiant efforts to overcome seemingly insurmountable odds for so very long, and at the end we had to give him the gift of peace. Until we see you again at the rainbow bridge brave man, run whole and run free and watch over us all. You were completely loved and desperately missed. April 1984 to January 2014
