Bay Morgan Mare: Lessons, Show Team
Mia is the foundation of our sanctuary program. She is part of a group of morgan horses seized in stafford county VA in 1990 and taken to the Equine Rescue League. She was only 3 years old with a newborn foal at her side when humane officers took custody of the horses. This case was the largest of it's kind back in the early 90s and the people responsible for neglecting the horses, several to the point of death, were prosecuted to the fullest extent.
Mia was adopted by our sanctuary founder in 1991 once the court awarded ownership of the horses to the ERL. She had been weaned from her foal but was essentially a still underweight, almost feral mare with no handling. The first year was quite a learning curve as Tara worked hard to bond with Mia and teach her all the things she missed during her formative years and to enjoy having a relationship with humans. Under Tara's vigilant care, Mia blossomed into a beautiful young mare. In the years to come, Tara and Mia would compete in halter and under saddle classes at both local shows and A rated Morgan shows and even qualify for the Grand National and World Championship Morgan HOrse show several times. They forged an unbreakable bond of friendship and trust and today, Mia is still at Tara's side, sharing her story and demostrating the amazing bond and capacity for love and healing that horses have.
Mia continues to help with lessons and sometimes shows. She does outreach for groups, demonstrations and gives many volunteers needed experience in horse handling. Mia was later joined at the farm by 2 other morgans from her group; her father, Justin and her cousin Gus!
A Glimpse of Mia!
